Tour Plan:

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870 m) → Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
  • Drive from Moshi (~45 minutes) to Marangu Gate.
  • Register with the Kilimanjaro National Park.
  • Begin the trek through lush rainforest, home to blue monkeys and towering ferns.
  • Hiking time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: ~8 km
  • Elevation gain: 830 m
  • Overnight at Mandara Hut.

After a short drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, you complete registration with Kilimanjaro National Park before beginning the trek. The trail ascends gently through lush rainforest, home to towering trees, giant ferns, and playful blue monkeys. The well-maintained path makes for a comfortable first day on the mountain, ending at Mandara Hut where you settle in for the night.

  • Climb out of the forest into heathland and moorland ecosystems.
  • Views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks emerge.
  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours
  • Distance: ~12 km
  • Elevation gain: 1,020 m
  • Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steadily into heathland and moorland. Vegetation becomes more sparse as wide views open up, revealing both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on clear days. The hike is longer but gradual, allowing the body to adjust to the increasing altitude before reaching Horombo Hut, set in open alpine terrain.

  • Trek through alpine desert terrain.
  • Gradual incline but thinner air begins to be noticeable.
  • Pass the Last Water Point and trek across the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours | Distance: ~10 km
  • Elevation gain: 980 m
  • Overnight at Kibo Hut, rest before summit night.

Today’s trek is shorter and less strenuous, allowing the body to adapt to altitude. The terrain becomes more rugged as vegetation thins, with giant senecio plants marking the transition into alpine conditions. Overnight at the peaceful Kikelewa Cave Camp.

Start Elevation: 3,600 m
End Elevation: 4,315 m
Distance: ~4 km
Time: ~4 hours
Zone: Alpine Desert

The route ascends into a stark alpine landscape toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp, set beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. The afternoon is reserved for rest, with an optional short acclimatization hike around the tarn.

Start Elevation: 4,315 m
Highest Point: 5,895 m
End Elevation: 3,720 m
Distance: ~20 km
Time: 12–14 hours
Zone: Alpine Desert / Arctic / Heath

After a morning trek to Kibo Hut, climbers rest and prepare for the summit attempt. The ascent begins around midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After summit celebrations, the descent continues via the Marangu Route to Horombo Camp.

Start Elevation: 3,720 m
End Elevation: 1,970 m
Distance: ~20 km
Time: 5–6 hours
Zone: Montane Forest

The final descent follows a well-maintained trail through heath and lush rainforest. At Marangu Gate, climbers sign out, receive summit certificates, and transfer back to Moshi.
